Tricolor Heron

A tricolor heron (egretta tricolor) in marshland at Brazos Bend State Park, Texas. The picture was taken in late winter, and the bird is beginning to develop mating plumage. Buff plumes on the back are starting to appear, and the beak is changing from yellow to blue. Tricolor herons live in marshes, swamps, and other wetlands. They can be identified by their rufous neck and white belly. Their call is a soft nasal moaning.
