Whitby, from the Abbey Ruins
The first monastery on the site of Whitby Abbey was founded in the 7th century. It is presumed to have been destroyed by Viking raiders around 867. After the Norman Conquest, the monastery was refounded by Reinfrid, a Norman knight who became a Benedictine monk. The town of Whitby has a long history since Saxon times. Bram Stoker took much of his inspiration for his novel Dracula from the town, and in the 1800's Whitby was a major centre for the whaling industry. Today Whitby is still a significant shipping port and centre for the fishing industry.
