Waimea Canyon was created as a result of the Waimea River carving through the lava flows of central Kauai. The central peak of Kauai, Mount Wai'ale'ale, is one of the wettest places on earth, receiving an average of 466 inches of rainfall a year. Erosion has turned the originally black basalt into a bright rust red. |
