In the early days of cattle ranching in Alberta, the North West Mounted Police provided security and the market required to establish the cattle industry. From the beginning it was "big business". By 1895 the entire region was controlled by about 200 cattlemen. These were not simple farmers. Most came from wealthy upper-class eastern Canadian and British backgrounds, and they provided the political and social leadership in the area. Their political connections were powerful, and the influence of these "old money" families continues to this day. |
