Spouting Horn Blowhole, Kauai
A blow hole is a cavity formed in the ground at the end of a sea cave. Waves enter the cave and the water is thrown up through the blowhole. In Hawaii they are usually formed by lava tubes. The water becomes compressed as the wave action forces it into the tube. The increased pressure causes the water to shoot upwards as much as 50 feet. At Spouting Horn on Kauai there used to be a much larger blowhole that threw water up to 200 feet high. The salt spray damaged nearby crops, so the blow hole was destroyed in the 1920's.
