Spider silk is used for more than catching and immobilizing prey. They also use it to protect their young, to make nests, and to move around. Silk is about 0.001 to 0.004 mm thick. It is made of proteins extruded from the body of the spider and is extremely strong as well as flexible. In addition to the familiar spiral "orb" web as seen in this image, some spiders make funnel shaped webs, some create sheet webs and others make a maze that confuses and traps their prey. Some spiders do not use a web to catch prey at all. |
