The Snowy Plover (charadrius alexandrinus) is a small light coloured shore bird with dark patches on the head, neck, and behind the eyes. They prefer flat, open coastal beaches, dunes, and near stream mouths. They nest in a simple scrape in the sand, laying 1 to 3 eggs which parents share incubation duty. They are an endangered species in North America due to habitat loss and particularly nesting disruption from increased recreational and construction projects along beaches. |
