Harbour seals are found in the northern hemisphere in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. They prefer coastal waters, and are often seen on beaches and in bays and estuaries. They have spotted coats in various shades from silver-gray to black or dark brown. Seal pups are often found alone on beaches, and well-meaning people pick them up, thinking they have been abandoned by their mothers. In many cases the mother is nearby, hunting or watching from a safe place, and the result is the pup will be unnecessarily orphaned. If you see a seal pup left alone, do not touch it. Instead call the local authorities who will determine what, if anything, should be done. |
