The Victoria Crowned Pigeon (Goura victoria) is the largest living pigeon. It is found in the wild only in New Guinea and a few nearby islands. Hunted for food and sport, and collected illegally for sale, they are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. They are also endangered by forestry and mining activities in their native habitat. They are quite tame and easy to hunt. Crowned pigeons are monogamous and mate for live. A single egg is laid each year, and the chick is raised by both parents. |
