The Palouse in Winter
The Palouse is a major wheat producing area in Eastern Washington. The land is characterized by small rolling hills that spread out in a carpet as far as the eye can see. These hills are silt dunes, formed during the ice ages. On a late December day we wound our way to the top of Steptoe Butte, looking down we could see the patterns in the fields formed by contour ploughing and new shoots of winter wheat.
