The Palouse in Winter
The steep slopes of the Palouse were unsuitable for ploughing and harvesting with large early tractors and combines. The first combines required a team of 40 horses to pull the heavy machinery. Early tractors were large and unstable on steep slopes, consequently, as recently as the 1930's many farmers in this area still used horses instead of tractors.
