The Palouse in Winter
The steep slopes of the hills of the Palouse require tilling and ploughing at right angles to the natural slope of the land. This reduces the flow of water (runoff) across the land surface, thus reducing erosion. Increased soil retention encourages root development in crops, and increased water filtration promotes better water quality. Contour ploughing also limits the release of nutrients and particulates into nearby streams and river systems.
