The Nene bird, also known as the Hawaiian Goose (Branta sandwicensis), was nearly wiped out during the 1940's due to hunting in their winter breeding season. Still on the Federal List of Endangered Species, the Nene are beginning to come back from the brink of extinction with about 800 wild Nene and numbers rising each year. The Nene is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, found only on Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii. It is the world's rarest goose. |
