The Needles Old Battery
The Old Battery is a Victorian coastal defence installation built high above the Needles rock formations on the Isle of Wight. Initially built to protect against an expected French invasion, it was used in both World Wars to test anti-aircraft guns. Later in the 20th century the site was used to test rockets. The restored fortification has the original Victorian cannon on display. In 1903 these cannon were deemed to be obsolete and were thrown off the cliffs into the bay. They were recovered and set up on display when the fort was restored.
