The rise of an affluent middle class and the growth of cities in Victorian times fuelled a traditional British love of the seaside. The idea of getting away from the rigid structure and customs of Victorian society and relaxing in a more undemanding, even childlike environment, led to a boom in construction and tourism in English coastal towns. The pier at Lytham is one example of a much loved relic of those bygone days. |
