Fountains Abbey is Britain's largest monastic ruin. It was founded in 1132 by 13 Benedictine monks, exiled after a rebellion and a riot at St Mary's Abbey in York. Economics later forced them to join the Cistercian order. By the middle of the thirteenth century it was one of England's richest religious houses, mainly thanks to the efforts of the lay brothers who looked after all things secular. The abbots from Fountains sat in Parliament. Most of the ruins at Fountains are more complete than this small romantic corner, where all that remains of the impressive buildings are moss covered stone walls and parts of the floors. |
