Lamp Post
By the early twentieth century most cities in the US and Europe had gaslit streets. The need for fuel for these lamps resulted in 1000 gas works springing up in Britain alone by 1859. Today, many of the old gas lamps have been converted to electricity, due to the comparatively high costs for gas. There are still a few cities in North America and Europe that use gas lighting in historic districts. This old lamp is beside the canal in Ellesmere, Shropshire.
