Stork-billed Kingfisher (Pelargopsis capensis)
A large and handsome tree kingfisher, widely distributed in the tropical areas of Asia, from India to Indonesia. They are not often seen, because they are shy and quiet and although not considered endangered, they are sparsely distributed throughout their range. They sit quietly in a tree and wait for prey, which includes fish, frogs, crabs, rodents and even young birds. They swoop down from their tree and capture prey, which is then knocked senseless against a branch before it is eaten. They are found near freshwater wetlands (ponds, reservoirs, rivers) as well as brackish and coastal areas; and the edges of forest and cultivated lands. They are rarely seen in urban areas, and are mostly solitary.
