The Great Egret (casmerodius albus) is a large, white member of the heron family. They are 37-41 inches tall, with a wingspan of 52-57 inches, and weight about 35 ounces. They are a wading bird, and are easily spotted, but are easily confused with the Great White Heron, which has a heavier bill and pale, not black, legs. Colonies that live where there are cold winters will migrate to warmer climes. They eat fish, invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, birds and even small mammals. They will drag their feet in the sand to stir up prey, and then snatch it wth a stab of their long beak. |
