Gaslamp
Before electricity became widespread and economical to use, natural gas or coal gas was used for street lighting. The first public display of outside lighting using coal gas was at the Soho Foundry near Birmingham in 1802. By 1820 the city of Paris adopted gas street lighting, and many other cities soon followed. Towns became safer to travel around at night and crime was reduced. This gas lamp stands near the wharf in Ellesmere, Shropshire.
