Controlled burning is used in forest management to simulate the natural occurrence of fires that may have been prevented for many years. Fire renews a forest, helps clear out dead and rotting vegetation, and some seeds remain dormant until fire breaks down the seed coating. This picture shows the remains of a prescribed burn lit in 1993 on the Bow Valley Parkway near Banff to renew aging lodgepole pine forest. Recent controlled burns have been used to try to stop the spread of pine beetle infestations. |
