Fishing Boats, Prince Rupert
Prince Rupert is Canada's gateway to Alaska and the Queen Charlotte Islands. Eagles, bears and whales outnumber people in this remote town where fishing is both a job and a recreation. Prince Rupert was selected from the dozens of cannery villages on British Columbia's coast to be the terminus of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway at the beginning of the twentieth century. New cruise facilities and the increasing popularity of Alaska cruising are helping to revitalize the town and ensure its continuing importance as a transportation hub. The harbour is the 3rd largest ice free harbour in the world. Ocean going freighters ship grain, lumber, pulp, mineral oil, sulphur and coal to international markets of the Pacific Rim.
