Erosion
After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, Whitby Abbey church was stripped of the valuable lead in its roof. This left it vulnerable to the elements, and it suffered two major collapses. Occupying a commanding site on a headland high above the North Sea, the abbey was at the mercy of the wind and rain, and the soft limestone has been eroded into fantastical shapes. This is one my favourites, a photograph of the multicoloured, eroded limestone pillars of the nave of the abbey church, but I have rotated the picture to produce an abstract image of subtle colour and texture.
