In 1539, Whitby Abbey fell victim to the dissolution of the monasteries, and the buildings and lands were sold. The abbey buildings were stripped of lead and some of the stone and other materials were removed and used in building projects. Much of the church collapsed in the late 1700's, and futher damage was done in 1914 when German Navy ships shelled Whitby. The soft limestone pillars have been sculpted by wind and weather into wonderful shapes. |
