Cumberland Island is Georgia's largest and southernmost barrier island. It is now designated National Seashore and managed by the National Park Service. Once a retreat for the wealthy Carnegie family, today it is mostly left wild, with large tracts designated wilderness. There is limited access for visitors, with no more than 300 allowed on the island at any time. Day trips are available, and camping for up to 7 days is permitted. There is still one privately owned luxury hotel on the island. All attempts to create resort facilities or luxury housing tracts have been unsuccessful.
