Genetically, the wild horses of Cumberland Island are similar to the feral horses of North Carolina, which have distinctive Spanish characteristics and a stocky build. The Cumberland Island horses however, appear to have more in common with the Appaloosa, including greater height and longer backs, varied coloration, and mottled skin. Roughly 150 horses live on the island, and the population is growing in the absence of predators. |
