De La Warr Gallery, Bexhill
The De La Warr Gallery in Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex, was built in 1935. The design was outrageously modern for the time. The architects were Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff, the design chosen by an international competition with 230 entries. The building, considered an icon of the Modernist Movement, fell into disrepair but was restored and reopened in 2005 as a national centre for contemporary arts. The contrast between the glass and steel modern building and its Victorian neighbours is emphasised in this study of reflections.
