Bananas are the fourth largest fruit crop in the world, after grapes, citrus fruit, and apples. A banana plant, although often very large, is not a tree. The stem is made up of tightly wrapped leaf sheaths. Leaves emerge from through the centre of the stem and expand at the top. Once the plant has produced a certain number of leaves, the flowering head emerges. This picture was taken in Hawaii, on Oahu, in February 2006. |
