On clear mornings, if you get up early enough, you can watch hot air balloons take off from the grounds of the Military Museum in Calgary, Canada. The brightly coloured balloons start out as a bundle of cloth, and the basket that seems so very small is quite a substantial wicker construction. It is fascinating to watch as the envelopes are gradually inflated using powerful fans, followed by blasts of hot air from the propane burners.
