Arches, St Albans Cathedral

golden light on St Albans Cathedral

Much of the architecture of St Albans Cathedral dates from Norman times. The former abbey church was extended and rebuilt many times, and was restored (in a somewhat controversial manner) during the Victorian era, when it became a cathedral. This is a detail of the arches above the main doors on the west front of the building. The beautiful light of an autumn afternoon turned the stone to gold and created wonderful shadow detail.
