Hippeastrum is Latin for "horseman's star" and was chosen in the 19th century for the stunning blooms that are now commonly (and erroneously) known as amaryllis. They grow in tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. Dutch growers in the 18th century were the first to import the bulbs and begin to develop the many hybrids and cultivars available today. This bud is just about to open. I like the red streaks on the top and the way the light from the nearby window has caught the underside. |
