The Cliffs at Alum Bay, Isle of Wight
Geologists offer several theories for what causes the brightly coloured strata of the sand cliffs of Alum Bay. Tourists used to take home jars and paintings made of the multicoloured sands. Today they are only allowed to buy what washes down naturally, it is considered too dangerous to allow climbing on the cliffs and digging. The cliffs are part of the Bracklesham Group of sedimentary rocks, at the far western end of the Isle of Wight.
